Art
Steps into a New Horizon |
|
Modern
technology has certainly changed the manner
in which Art is produced, giving birth to
the concept of Digital Art, a far cry from
the classic Art produced directly by the
artist’s own hand. Educational institutions
are now encouraging students, especially Art
students, to step into the new horizon of
Technological Art.
In this connection, the Lopez Memorial
Museum and the University of the Philippines
‘ College of Mass Communications recently
featured visual artist Yason Banal in a
lecture spiced with a slideshow and
performance at
the St Scholastica’s College in
Manila. Banal has a BA in Film and
Audio-Visual |
|
Communications from the University of the
Philippines , a Masters in Fine Art from the
University of London and a Certificate in
Experimental Fashion from Central Saint
Martin’s, also in the United Kingdom. He has
participated in several international
exhibitions. |

Silvana Ancellotti Diaz, proprietor of Galleria Duemila,
exhibits her collection of the late Onib Olmedo’s
drawings and paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of
Manila until October 27. The show is appropriately
dubbed My Friend, Onib Olmedo. Diaz and the late
figurative impressionist painter Olmedo first met in the
early 1970s when both were beginning their respective
careers in the local art scene. The collection from the
mid-1970s to the 1980s includes mostly drawings that
have a spontaneous quality, thus revealing a creative
phase that precedes the artist’s paintings on canvas.
The few works on canvas were selected to represent
specific periods in the artist’s development.

Ballet Manila presents Peter
Ilich (Pyotr Ilyich in Russian) Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, which is the most
popular and well-loved classical ballet of all time with its haunting music
and awesome movements. Composed in 1876, Swan Lake has been described as one
of the most physically challenging for ballet dancers. Russian composer
Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) had an extraordinary gift for melody and brilliant
orchestration and his music counts with drama and emotional intensity. His
other ballets are Sleeping Beauty and the
favorite-for-Christmas-presentation, The Nutcracker. Lisa Macuja Elizalde
and guest Russian dancer Maxim Chaschegorov reprise the roles of Odette-Odille
and Prince Siegfried, respectively. Alternating are Mylene Aggabao and
Marian Faustino as Odette-Odille and Rudy de Dios and Nazer Salgado as
Prince Siegfried.
