Zamboanga... from page 1

ZAMBOECOZONE covers more than 16,000 hectares and is an integrated agro-industrial, commercial, financial and tourist center with free port status. Notable is that Zamboanga is the gateway to the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), making it the ideal hub for enterprises targeting distribution to this market of 40 million consumers.
    The foreign and local investors - called locators - who are already operating in ZAMBOECOZONE include the following: Nihon International Trading Corporation (Japanese), Mabuhay Satellite Corporation, Multi Products Distribution Systems Inc. (Indian), Globe Telecom, Seachamp International Export Corporation, Philippine China South Ocean King Ye Tobacco Corporation (Chinese), Demak (Malaysian), IPDI National Power Distributors Inc.(American), Alfranz Trading, Southgate Ace Marine Inc. (Korean), Peninsula Duty Free Corporation (Indian) , OMED Zamboanga Corporation (Japanese), and Bendemil International Inc.
   Foreign business entities, either by themselves or in joint venture with Philippine firms, may invest within the zone in any sector of industry, trade or commerce.
Wow! 100 Percent Foreign Ownership

   Privileges and incentives given to investors by ZAMBOECOZONE include the following:
- Income Tax Holiday or exemption from corporate income tax for four years, which may be extended to a maximum of eight years;
- Five percent flat tax rate from gross income earned after the income tax holiday;
- Tax-free importation of goods;

COLLEGE GRADUATES WHO wish to enter the tourism industry better brush up on their English and personality skills in order to increase their chances of landing a job in a leading hotel or resort. This was according to leading tourism stakeholders in Cebu who were unanimous in saying that majority of the graduates interviewed lacked the proper job and attitude skills needed for their respective establishments.
   Timothy Wright, general manager of Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort & Spa, added that the industry also needs individuals who rise from the rank-and-file and are properly equipped with the managerial skills.
   “The Philippines may not have flashy resources but it still created a great impact on the Asean Summit delegates due to the natural warmth and friendliness of the locals. We train for skills and later develop the personality traits,” he related during the Industry-Academe forum held at downtown Cebu.
   Agreeing with him, Roy Abraham, general manager of Cebu City Marriott Hotel, declared that their first priority in hiring employees is that they have to like meeting people and making new friends.“We focus on the long-term prospects and potentials of the people we hire. We want them to grow with the organization as more branches open up. Also, we want to maintain our high ratings in guest satisfaction,” he added.
   Gerry Rodriguez, head of human resources in Plantation Bay Resort & Spa, placed a premium on English skills, saying that the better the grasp, the higher the chances of promotion in the resort.
   “We also want our employees to be well-rounded. College degrees are not required in over half the jobs in the resort since many are contractuals. Also, we are aware of the fact that employees usually do not stay long in the industry,” he affirmed.

                    Crux of the Matter
   Another common observation shared by the stakeholders is that the students, especially interns, have a dis-

- Net Operating Loss Carryover tax scheme;
- One hundred percent (100 %) foreign ownership of the business;
- Foreigners investing USD150,000 or more will be granted permanent resident status, along with their spouse, dependents and unmarried children below 21 years of age.
   Many of the locators are presently availing of the first-class housing facilities inside ZAMBOECOZONE. Attractive and spacious bungalows in a pollution-free zone complete with a lovely Nature Park, guarantee comfortable living. And outside the zone is lovely Zamboanga City with its resorts, beaches, hotels, restaurants, department stores, cinemas, sports arena, golf course, universities, hospitals, churches of various denominations and a modern airport. The Zamboanga City Seaport provides a vital link to Manila, Cebu, Sandakan in Malaysia, and other ports in Mindanao. (A travel destination story on Zamboanga City will come out in a forthcoming issue of What’s On & Expat.)

                    Where to Register

   Potential investors are currently making inquiries or registering at the ZAMBOECOZONE office located on San Ramon Street, Zamboanga City; tel. nos. (63)(62)992-0409, 992-2012; e-mail ecozone@jetlink.com.ph; website www.zambofreeport.com. Chairman and administrator is Georgina Yu.

like for menial jobs and are not too enthusiastic about mopping floors and washing dishes.
   Some students even expect to fulfill tasks and responsibilities in an office with a computer since they feel that they have a degree to boot and are thus “equipped and qualified” to handle white-collar jobs.
   One practitioner also mentioned that students seem motivated by money and not the passion to serve, thereby clouding their work philosophy and judgment on hand.
   While the innate good nature and warmth of the Pinoy can’t help but win acclaim from foreigners, industry qualifications do require stricter prerequisites so as to consistently upgrade services and trends in the tourism field.
  Top management in the field thus strongly imply that the students upgrade their personality, attitude, and English know-how to project a more attractive and knowledgeable workforce to their clientele, look beyond personal gain, and cope better with international competition.

RP, Malaysia to Develop
Cruise Ship Market?

By Richard A. Ramos

MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT officials have expressed great interest at developing the cruise market along with the Philippines partly due to the presence of the China Sea, home to rich marine treasures that lie between both countries.
   The China Sea is also no stranger to large-scale sports, such as diving and game fishing, since the Philippines is known to be a bio-diversity hotspot while hosting probably the most number of endemic species in the world.
   According to Dato’ Mirza Mohammad Taiyab, director-general for Tourism Malaysia, the Philippines would have the edge since the beaches have long-served as the Philippines’ foremost tourism attractions.
   Majority of the beaches have also remained relatively unspoiled and offer inexpensive rates to its visitors, thus reinforcing the Philippines as a tropical hotspot in the region.
   Taiyab also pointed out the country’s advantage as an archipelago composed of several thousand islands hosting rich coral and marine life forms.
    Four of the top divespots in the country are found right in the Visayas Triangle; Moalboal and Malapascua in Cebu; Apo Island in Negros Oriental, and Siquijor.
   Taiyab also proposed that both countries exert more effort to help each other regarding social and regional understanding in order to make for a more united ASEAN, or Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
   “We all belong to the same region and we still are not familiar with each other’s tourism industry. We need to patronize each other’s assets and strengths in order to make for fuller linkages and cooperation,” he affirmed.
   Malaysia currently celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence on a grand scale.
    Feting its slogan “Malaysiaku Gemilang,” or My Excellent Asia, Malaysia’s month-long celebration of its Merdeka feast is filled with activities that take the Malaysians along for a select historical journey.
   This year also marks “Visit Malaysia Year 2007”, an international campaign aimed at promoting Malaysia as one of the leading holiday destinations in the region.

Spacious bungalows within the ZAMBOECOZONE are presently occupied by several foreign locators.
