The Arabian Nights
were brought to Manila at a reception commemorating the
77th National Day of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hosted
by the Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy
Mosques to the Republic of the Philippines Mohammed Ameen Wali at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza’s Grand
Ballroom. For all Saudis and Arabs around the world, the
Saudi National Day celebrates one of the most important
events of the 20th century – the founding of the Kingdom
of Saudi Arabia. September 23 marks the unification of
the country by King Abdul Aziz in 1932, and when the
world recognized the sovereignty of the new nation. The
date was first celebrated as a holiday in 2005.
A grand masmaq (a huge historical castle) was especially erected
for the occasion. Ambassador Wali warmly welcomed guests
in an “oasis”-inspired setting, while onstage, three
large screens displaying a visual presentation featuring
the Kingdom’s growth, stages of development and
advancement since the time of the founder King Abdulaziz
Al Saud (May Allah bless his soul) up to the present.
An authentic Arabian Tent complete with camel was also set up for
guest to mingle in and take photos. More than 1,300
guests including prominent personalities and foreign
dignitaries were on hand to take part in the
celebrations. Authentic Arabian cuisine from the embassy
complemented the Sofitel’s Arabian and Mediterranean
selections by their house chef. What’s On & Expat
congratulates the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques (May
Allah keep him) and the Saudi people wishing them more
progress and prosperity.
