Las Piņas Boys
Choir: From Asia to Europe
By Carmencita H. Acosta
|
The Center
Stage at SM Mall of Asia will resound with great
music on October 13 starting at 8 pm as the Las
Piņas Boys Choir performs with vim and vigor
songs by celebrated composers, both local and
foreign, classical and pop, to the accompaniment
of a grand piano.
The announcement comes from Rev. Benjamin Molina, Jr., assistant director
of St. Joseph’s Academy in Las Piņas City where
the Boys Choir is based.
As if to remind the audience that Christmas is fast approaching, the very
talented boys of the choir will also perform
Benjamin Britten’s “Ceremony of Carols.”
Philippine folk songs are included in the
evening’s repertoire. Conductor is Professor
Armando Salarza, himself a member of the Las
Piņas Boys Choir during his childhood.
The World Choir Games to be held in Graz, Austria on July 9 to 19, 2008
will have the Las Piņas Boys Choir as the
official representatives of the Philippines. A
concert tour in Vienna and Rome is likewise
included in the group’s itinerary.
|
The founder of the Las Piņas Boys Choir
is Leo Renier, a Belgian. A boys choir
singer since he was in grade 3 in his
hometown of Hasselt, Renier studied
organ and music history in the Hasselt
Conservatory. He arrived in the
Philippines in 1969 and formed the Las
Piņas Boys Choir in St. Joseph parish.
He also initiated the International Bamboo
Organ Festival and became its first
artistic director. |
