Let’s face it,
most of us city-dwellers take time out for a little
R&R rather than properly observe All Saints Day and
All Souls Day by visiting our dearly departed in the
cemeteries. Traffic is naturally horrendous during
those days, but what better way to escape the jam
than to leave Manila altogether?
Only a short plane ride away, Hong Kong offers a fun
refuge for restless folks looking for a quick
holiday. Last year, this cosmopolitan archipelago
welcomed more that 450,000 visitors from the
Philippines alone. Hong Kong is home to one of
Forbes Magazine’s 10 Most Popular Amusement Parks in
the World, Ocean Park Hong Kong. And tourists from
flying in from the Philippines make up a large
segment of the park’s visitors.
Even with the recent completion of Disneyland Hong
Kong, Ocean Park did not get lost in oblivion. It is
full steam ahead with its USD800 million Master
Redevelopment Plan, a renovation and improvement
project which is set to be completed over eight
phases by 2012. It is expected to double the present
number of attractions in |

the park.At
present, Ocean Park is still the wonderful
education, conservation and entertainment-themed
place that has been delighting generations of
tourists from all over the globe.
Ocean Park was officially launched in 1977 and for
thirty years has been Hong Kong’s first and only
homegrown theme park “We’re a generational park,”
Ocean Park’s Chief Executive Tom Mehrmann said.
“Those who came as kids once upon a time are now
bringing their kids.”
This month witnesses one of the park’s five
blockbuster annual events: the Ocean Park Halloween
Bash. This year’s Halloween Bash is anticipated to
be the biggest event in the world, featuring 40
Halloween attractions, a 250-strong cast of ghostly
characters, seven haunted houses, 10 shows such as
the Zombie Can-Can and Corpse Races and 40 daily
performances. In addition, there will also be
attractions for the younger set at Ocean Park’s Kids
World.
