Atchison and Dudnik also played a specially commissioned piece set to the music of British composer Sir Edward Elgar while Ballet Manila performers, led by Lisa Macuja-Elizalde, danced to the music in a choreography done by Osias Barroso. CCP’s Literary Yearbook
Off the Press

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) recently issued its 20th anniversary literary yearbook entitled “Ani” (Harvest) focusing on the theme of nature and the endangered environment. This year’s issue is the 33th volume published within 20 years by the CCP. The journal contains poems, fiction and essays from writers all over the Philippines,

Dennis Espada

many of them writing in their respective local languages. “Ani” is one of the longest surviving national literary journals in the Philippines.
Although mostly in the vernacular, the journal also contains English poems and fiction which foreign readers might be interested to read, considering that these focus on the environmental situation in the Philippines where loggers are guilty of deforestation and industrial companies bring about the pollution of the waters. Among the English contributions are those by poets Dennis Espada, “Ethnic Scourge” and Rodrigo V. dela Peña, Jr., “Meditation.”
Dennis Espada’s “Ethnic Scourge” laments in the second stanza:
“Until Green Circle came to our forest,
    tearing down hundreds everyday;
ruining saplings while all the rest
of flora and fauna, their nests, including us,
    were driven away.”
Copies of “Ani” may be bought at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. For details, call up (02) 832-1125 local 1113 or 1116.

Through Art

By Carmencita H. Acosta

Do you want to help save the life of an impoverished child afflicted with primary tuberculosis?
All you need to give is the comparatively paltry amount of six thousand pesos, equivalent to the cost of a medical treatment for each sick child.
The Kaibigan Ermita Outreach Foundation, Inc. located at 2546 Nakar Street, San Andres, Manila will present “Art for a Cause,” an evening of viewing paintings and a theatrical performance. The event will be held at the auditorium Pope Pius XII Center on United Nations Avenue, Paco, Manila from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Healthy Children Helping Sick Children
Sixty paintings each on the theme of what makes a child happy will be exhibited and offered for sale in aid of urban poor and street children suffering from primary tuberculosis. The paintings were done by child artists who volunteered their time and talent to mount the exhibit for the sake of helping other children who are not only poor but also sick.
The painting exhibit will be followed by the performance of a new Nativity

play entitled “The First Christmas.” Performers are members of the Kaibigan Choir and Theater Group. Traditional carols as well as six new and original songs will be presented.
Your help will be much appreciated. For details, call up Susan Biteng, director of the Kaibigan Ermita Outreach Foundation, Inc. at (02) 589-6665 or 561-8508.
