DHL, THE WORLD’S leading express and logistics company, and the National Basketball Association (NBA) recently announced a new multi-year partnership agreement where DHL will become the “Official Express and Logistics Provider of the NBA in Asia.” As part of the agreement, DHL will participate in NBA initiatives across various platforms and media outlets throughout the continent. DHL will launch the new partnership with a first-ever “NBA Finals Trophy Tour” in Asia in July.
DHL will also serve as partner of the NBA China Games 2007 featuring the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Orlando Magic, and the Chinese Men’s National team in Shanghai and Macao from October 17-20. In addition, DHL will support the Basketball without Borders 2007 program, the NBA’s global basketball development and community outreach initiative, in Asia, which will be held in Shanghai in July.
Trophy Tour
This summer, DHL will bring the ultimate symbol of the NBA champions - the Larry O’Brien trophy - to Asia. The trophy, awarded annually to the team that wins the NBA Finals, was designed by Tiffany’s in 1977. From 1977 to 1984, the World Championship Trophy was then renamed the Larry O’Brien trophy in honor of the league’s third commissioner in 1984. NBA Legends will accompany the NBA Finals Trophy Tour in 2007 and 2008, bringing to life how they have gone ‘all the way’ to become NBA Champions.
“This partnership establishes our connection with basketball, one of the fastest growing and most watched sports within China. With multiple NBA events now being staged annually throughout Asia, it provides a great opportunity to showcase how DHL goes all the way with our expertise in providing total logistics solutions in a region of increasing commercial importance in DHL’s worldwide network,” said Dan McHugh, Senior Vice President of Commercial, DHL Express Asia-Pacific.
As an official partner of the NBA China Games - and serving as the official logistics partner of the NBA in Asia - DHL will deliver the original NBA floor and back boards, thus ensuring the games are played at its highest levels on authentic NBA flooring and equipment. The China Games 2007 will tip off on October 17 with a game between Cleveland and the Magic in Shanghai at the Qizhong Forest Sports City. The event will then head to Macao with two games at the new Venetian Arena. On October 18, the Magic play the Chinese Men’s National Team, and a rematch between the Magic and the Cavaliers will take place on 20 October.
“We’re thrilled with this partnership. DHL’s expertise and reliability in shipping and logistics will be a tremendous asset during the upcoming China Games and other grassroots NBA activities,” said Mark Fischer, Managing Director, NBA China. Basketball without Borders, a joint initiative by the NBA and FIBA, is a global basketball development and community outreach program that uses the sport of basketball to influence positive social change among future generations.
Since the inaugural camp in 2001, the program has featured more than 160 NBA players, coaches and team personnel from 30 different teams as camp coaches and mentors for more than 1,000 young athletes from 100 countries and territories. The 2007 edition of the program will feature first-time camps in São Paulo, Brazil and Paris, France, with a return to Shanghai, China and Johannesburg, South Africa.
