What do you think of former Chief Justice Davide’s appointment as Philippine Ambassador to the UN?

I think it’s a fairly good appointment. Simply because of his stature and seniority, having been the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court so there is a certain credibility that he provides for the country, being our representative to the UN. However, I think there are also downsides from the local political scene. People are saying... I think I read somewhere that they don’t like his appointment because it was sort of like a payment for some of the favors that he may have dispensed during his term. But I guess that’s Philippine politics. So I guess overall, it’s a good appointment. Hopefully he will do a good job, rather than just sit there. Because he’s already retirement age so it’s likely he’ll only be there for a year then somebody else will take over. It’s a waste if he doesn’t do something good for the country.

I think he would make a good ambassador and representative of the Philippines to the United Nations. With his credentials, I don’t have any doubt he will perform or do his best for the country, for world peace as well as security in the region.

I think it’s OK. Chief Justice Davide is highly qualified. The question here really is he was appointed by the President without being confirmed by the Congress. I find nothing controversial about the appointment because it’s the prerogative of the President. He obviously has the qualifications

A career diplomat would have been a better choice for the post.

He was impressive during the impeachment. And another thing, I think that during the years that he was with the Justice department, he developed this balanced way of looking at things. At the same time, this is a new thing for him, but it’s probably inherent in him to be diplomatic. So that’s important. And at the same time I think he deserves it.

I totally agree with the appointment of former Chief Justice Davide as ambassador to the UN because of his past track record as Chief Justice. And I think the appointment is proper because as far as I know it was in the nature of an interim appointment which the President can make while Congress is in recess.
