Asean leaders to wear
silk cocoon barongs for summit

By Carmencita H. Acosta

The 10 leaders ofthe Association of South East Asian Nations (Asian) will be wearing exclusively designed silk cocoon barongs by Jean Goulbourn. The Asean heads of states will be in Cebu to attend the 12th Asean summit that started Jan. 12 until Jan. 15.

Jean Goulbourn’s embroidery on some of silk cocoon barongs
inspired by windows of ancestral homes.

In the APEC Summit in 1996 held in Subic, Goulbourn designed the barongs for the Asian leaders with her embroidery theme inspired by windows of ancestral homes. This time, Goulbourn has blended art and culture by interpreting renowned Filipino artist Manuel Baldemor’s artwork titled “Togetherness” for the Asean leaders’ formal handwoven silk-piña barong. It depicts a village scene where the people of the community live and work together in harmony--which ties together the theme for the summit.

The summit carries a theme “One Caring and Sharing Community.” Goulbourn also took elements of the Asean logo which is surrounded by 10 sampaguitas, representing the 10 member states, and has stylized the national flower for a range of barongs--both formal and casual--to be worn by the leaders during their meetings.

School of Music Celebrates Centennial

By Richard A. Ramos

The first music school in the Philippines celebrates its centennial this year. St. Scholastica’s College School of Music in Manila is now an institution of a hundred years old, a far cry from the one-teacher, one-instrument it once was. At the turn of the 20th century, Missionary Benedictine Sisters came to Manila to put up a school called St. Scholastica’s College in Tondo. Later, they moved to San Marcelino Street and then to the present site in Leon Guinto Street, Manila. Noticing the Filipino students’ flair for music and the arts, the nuns requested for a piano teacher from Germany. Shortly a year after, in October 1907, concert pianist Sister Baptista Battig came to the Philippines and immediately scheduled piano lessons for the children.

She was to become the pioneer of formal music education in the country. A story goes that a German resident of Manila named Augustus Gnandt went around the streets of Tondo, ringing a bell to announce that a piano teacher was available at the Benedictine Sisters’ convent. She eventually established the system of formally grading piano studies and formulated a definite course with standardized curriculum that gave the graduate a recognized degree and professional status.

Apart from enriching Philippine music through her teachings, one of her best-known legacies is the traditional and much-sought after St. Cecilia’s concert. Started in 1923, the concert is held yearly inside the St. Cecilia’s Hall of the school. A number of activities are lined up for the centennial celebration. The highlights of which are the 100 fingers and 100 voices performance in October, the concert series in various stations of the LRT and the MRT March and other concert tours around the Philippines. The celebration formally opens on Jan. 28 with a grand music alumnae homecoming. For more information, please call the dean of the School of Music and chairperson of the Battig Foundation Sister Mary Placid through (02)526-8080.
